10g to 90gLures for Tuna
Casting metal at breaking tuna is Australian sportfishing at its best. It needs a lure that flies and holds up to a flat-out retrieve.
The short answer
35g · 50g
For longtail tuna, cast a 50g Lazer on a big threadline outfit and wind flat out. Proven colours in Queensland are chrome with silver tape, blue with silver tape and blue with red tape; anglers in WA and the NT also do well on all white Lazers in 50g and 35g. Aim along the front edge of the school and close the bail just before the lure lands.
Colours by region
| Queensland | Chrome with silver tape, blue with silver tape, blue with red tape. |
|---|---|
| WA and NT | The same, plus all white Lazers in 50g and 35g. |
The approach
Find tuna by watching for feeding birds and splashes. Approach from upwind, knock the boat into neutral within casting range and keep the motor running. Have the bail open before the fish are in range, lead the school with your cast and start winding the instant the lure hits the water.
The Teeny Poppa is a small metal popper built for high speed spinning to surface-feeding tuna.
