10g to 90gLures for Mackerel
Vertical spinning Lazers over reef drop-offs has been accounting for Spanish and school mackerel in Queensland for twenty years.
The short answer
35g · 50g · 70g
For mackerel, vertical spin a 35g, 50g or 70g Lazer: drop it to the bottom in freefall, then wind as fast as you can. Mackerel often favour silver, chrome or pearl, and the red head has also had great success. Keep contact with the lure as it sinks, because school mackerel hit on the drop and will bite you off on slack line.
Where to find them
The drop-offs around reef complexes are excellent places for Spanish mackerel. In the big bays and harbours, navigation markers and large pylons close to deep water hold school mackerel along with kingfish, amberjack and trevally.
How to fish it
- 1Position slightly up current of the target area.
- 2Freefall the Lazer to the bottom, keeping contact with the line.
- 3Wind flat out the moment it touches down.

Questions anglers ask
Why do I keep getting bitten off by mackerel?
School mackerel often hit a Lazer while it flutters down. With slack line you won’t feel the strike before their teeth cut through. Keep the line tight on the drop.
What colour Lazer for mackerel?
Silver/chrome and pearl are the usual favourites, and the red head model has also done very well.
