40g to 80gMetal Jigging Lures
Jigging works a lure up and down instead of across. Metal sinks fast and flutters on the drop, which is when a lot of fish hit.
The short answer
To jig a metal lure, let it sink to the bottom, raise the rod quickly, then let the lure drop back and repeat at different depths. Keep the line tight on the drop, because fish often strike as the lure falls. Lazers from 15g to 35g are proven for jigging deep water bass; slow pitch jigs from 40g to 80g and the 125g and 170g Lazer Jig suit deeper water.
The basic jig
- 1Let the lure sink to the bottom.
- 2Raise the rod quickly.
- 3Let the lure drop back, keeping contact with the line.
- 4Repeat, and try the method at various depths.
Heavier jigs
The slow jigs come in 40g and 60g with a 4/0 assist hook and 80g with a 5/0 assist hook. The Lazer Jig comes in 125g (glow in the dark) and 170g (blue chrome or glow in the dark) with a 5/0 assist hook.

Questions anglers ask
What is the difference between jigging and vertical spinning?
Both start by dropping the lure to the bottom. Jigging lifts and drops it; vertical spinning winds it straight back to the surface as fast as possible to trigger pelagic fish.
