Lazer Lures

Lures for Kingfish

Yellowtail kingfish are the most esteemed target of the southern spin fisher, and they hit metal hard.

The short answer

35g · 50g · 70g

For yellowtail kingfish, vertical spin a 35g, 50g or 70g Lazer around steep rocky shorelines, islands and channel markers: freefall to the bottom and wind flat out. Kings sometimes hit close to the surface. Use sturdy tackle, because kingfish pull the rod down hard enough to hit the gunwale.

Where and how

Around the rocky shoreline of the southern coast, where the bottom drops away steeply, and around rocky islands are top spots for kingfish and silver trevally. Channel markers and big pylons in harbours like Sydney Harbour and Port Phillip Bay attract kings too.

In the Australian Boating feature on Lazer Lures, Brooke Frecklington notes that kingfish, small and big, are easily convinced by Lazers in blue colours.

Questions anglers ask

What tackle do I need for kingfish on metal?

Large saltwater threadline reels or high speed overheads on rods that can take a knock. Kingfish often pull the rod down violently, so avoid thin-walled high modulus graphite.
